Young Adults
and Emancipated Youth

Young adults — ages 18-24 — who are in transition from homelessness and foster care programs to independent living are the focus of A Miner Miracle’s new program service. As these young men and women strive to overcome the hardships they have experienced and the uncertainties of emancipation, their entry into the job interview process can be overwhelming without guidance to help them understand the power of perceptions and employment and workplace procedures.

A Miner Miracle counselors provide clothing that is age appropriate and suitable for the workplace, consultation about healthy grooming, and clear guidelines for workplace etiquette.

Our young adult services include:

Meet Leo

“My experience [at A Miner Miracle] was great; I felt like a celebrity! By looking good for an interview, it boosted my confidence and people had more respect for me.” — Leo

Entering the foster care system at three years-of-age, Leo is no stranger to change and instability. He has lived in four different foster homes and one group home. Last year he turned eighteen and exited the system — ready to start an independent life. His goal: to become an electrician and be self-sufficient.

He needed to attend trade school to learn new skills. He then was ready to find a job in his new field and support himself, including a home of his own.

Leo was sent to A Miner Miracle to get clothing and image counseling for his job search process. After his visit to A Miner Miracle he immediately secured a job and had the proper clothes to maintain his professional appearance for his training.

Leo is one of the lucky ones. Sadly, research tells us that youth who emancipate from the San Francisco foster care system are at high risk for homelessness, incarceration, unemployment and poverty, with 58% of youth sampled living below the poverty line and 60% having experienced homelessness after their emancipation.

The statistics are grim, but our newest program focuses directly on this very deserving population: emancipated youth. This program supports young people who are exiting the foster care system and are ready to start their independent lives but need clothing and image counseling to help them prepare for internships, court appearances, job interviews or even college tours. We assist them in their presentation and clothing needs by providing them with the resources they need to segue into the mainstream. The program increases the confidence, self esteem and success rate of emancipated youth just like Leo.
